Costa Rica is flyable year-round — but when you fly changes what you see, how smooth the ride is, and how your photos turn out. After thousands of hours over this country, here's our honest guide to timing your flight.
Best Time of Day
Morning (7–11 am): The Photographer's Window
Mornings bring the calmest air and clearest skies. Coastal haze hasn't built yet, volcano craters are usually cloud-free before 10 am, and the light is soft and even. If seeing Arenal's crater clearly is your priority, book the earliest slot you can — by midday, clouds often cap the cone.
Midday (11 am–3 pm): Bright and Bold
Great for ocean colors — the Pacific turns its most vivid turquoise under high sun. Air can be slightly bumpier as thermals build, but on our coastal routes it stays comfortable. Best choice for beach and island itineraries.
Golden Hour (4–6 pm): The Romantic Slot
Our most requested time, and for good reason. The low sun gilds the coastline, shadows give the mountains depth, and the whole country glows. Sunset champagne flights depart in this window. It books out first — reserve days ahead in high season.
Best Time of Year
Dry Season (December–April)
The most predictable flying weather: clear mornings, minimal rain, outstanding visibility almost every day. It's also peak travel season, so the best time slots sell out early. Book at least a week ahead.
Green Season (May–November)
Our pilots' secret favorite. Mornings are typically clear and flyable, the landscape is impossibly green, waterfalls run at full power, and afternoon showers usually arrive after morning flights are done. You'll also find better availability and a more exclusive feel. September–October can bring heavier rain on the Pacific side — but the Caribbean (Tortuguero) is often at its driest then, and we route accordingly.
